I like to think that Howl and Calcifer just sat down and had tea and a chat once in a while. You would too if your fireplace were a sentient fire demon. It’s one of the perks.
(Super late submission to ghibli jam, which I only found out about at 10PM last night (!) Process on twitter soon.)
The mountain temple.
The temple Hachi lives in with his granny. It sits atop & amongst the mountain forest. It’s much cooler air than below along the coast of their island. Temples are no longer visited by humans because in Hachi’s world, spirits live among the people in their little spirit houses. Here in the oldest temple, Hachi’s granny acts as a nurse tending to sick spirits. So the temple has become like a hospital for ill/agitated spirits. They can take refuge in the little houses by the stone statues.
This was based on Jinja/Shinto temples and Thai houses. I liked the idea of an open gate and spirits need places to live as they rest.
I have learned that painting forest foliage takes away half your life. Bamboo, ferns, firs and everything was learned here.
